Dekland Barnum

Troop number and community:
Troop 13, Dartmouth

Month and year you earned your eagle:
July 2009

Describe your Eagle project:
For my project I worked with a fellow Eagle Scout and friend cleaning up a piece of land purchased by the town to turn it into a park. My project was the creation of a kayak and canoe launch, and his was the parking lot. We both helped each other out and got a lot of help from our troop and the DPW (Dartmouth Public Works). We also coordinated everything with our recruited helpers.

What are some highlights of your Scouting experience?
One of the highlights of my Scouting experience has been visiting new places as a troop, like Ellis Island. We also went canoeing down a long and winding river. I enjoyed hanging out with my friends, and learning basic cooking, survival, emergency first aid and medical skills that I might not have learned if I did not join Scouting.

Explain why Scouting has been important to you and why it's still important to our community and nation after 100 years:
Scouting is important to me because it has taught me many skills. I learned about knots, the stars, leadership, survival, and first aid skills. These are all very valuable and even lifesaving skills. But though all that is important, I think what's more important is the fun you have, and the friends you make. That's what makes Scouting important. It brings boys together in a unique environment to help them learn while having fun. That's what Scouting is all about and that is what makes it so important after all these years, and for the many to come. I think boys learn better in a community that is safe and fun.
