Ryan Defond

Troop number and community:
Troop 1, Manville

Month and year you earned your eagle:
February 2010

Describe your Eagle project:
I erected a flagpole at the Saint James Cemetery in Manville RI. I had to raise the funds to purchase a flagpole, flags, and landscaping materials, and make the right contacts to drill into the ledge near the cemetery's altar. This was important to the community because there are many veterans buried there and there was no flagpole or flag to honor them.

What are some highlights of your Scouting experience?
The experiences I had with my friends while doing some of the usual Boy Scout type activities like camping, and hiking, and doing skits and songs by the campfire. My favorite experiences were attending the National Jamboree in 2005, whitewater rafting and working at Camp Yawgoog all summer.

Explain why Scouting has been important to you and why it's still important to our community and nation after 100 years:
To me Scouting has made me a better person. I've learned to make better ethical decisions and Scouting has helped me to become a better adult. Scouting teaches lessons, values and life skills. Scouting teaches lessons of how to carry oneself and how to contribute to your community and nation. These lessons are what makes Scouting important after 100 years.>
