Providence

Juan J. Parra

Troop number and community:
Troop 87, Providence

Month and year you earned your eagle:
June 2009

Describe your Eagle project:
My Eagle Project received the name of "House Fire Awareness and Smoke Detector Battery Clinic." As the name describes, the main focus of the project was to inform the community about house fire safety and the importance of being prepared when it comes down to being exposed to this situation. For part of the project, we had a house fire awareness meeting, where I received help from a Providence firefighter who taught the people of the community.

What are some highlights of your Scouting experience?
During the five years that I have been part of my troop I have come to learn a lot about a lot of things that helped me mature and grow into the person that I am now. Being the first Eagle Scout in my troop was a very big accomplishment to me; not only because I reached the highest rank in scouting, but also because all of the other scouts in my troop will be following my steps as they reach this milestone.

Explain why Scouting has been important to you and why it's still important to our community and nation after 100 years:
Scouting has been a very important part of my life because it has taught me values, showing me the correct way of doing things and showing me that there are a lot of things to do out in the real world. Scouting is more than just a simple organization, it is a brotherhood. Over time you get the sense that your troop becomes your second family. As I went through the whole scouting process, I learned skills and values that I will never forget and will always keep me being a better person.
